Step 1: Is anyone inside the car?
If a child or pet is in the car, call 911 right away. Cars heat up very fast in Arizona. Do not wait for a locksmith. Once emergency help is on the way, you can call us too.
Step 2: Stay safe
- Get into the shade or a cool building
- Drink water if it is hot out
- If you are in a quiet or unsafe place, move to a safer one and call for help from there
Step 3: Check the simple fixes
- Try every door, including the trunk or hatch, in case one is unlocked
- Check whether someone has a spare key who can bring it
- Many newer cars have a manufacturer app that can unlock them remotely. Check yours.
- Call your roadside assistance, insurance or auto club if you have one
Step 4: Call a locksmith
Have your location, the car's make, model and year, and your ID and proof of ownership ready. A professional gives you a quote before dispatching, then opens the car with non-destructive tools. See our car lockout service.
What not to do
- Do not use a coat hanger or wedge unless you know what you are doing. It can damage weather stripping, wiring and door components.
- Do not break a window unless someone's safety is at risk. A new window costs far more than a lockout.
- Do not call the first number you find without checking. Read our guide on avoiding locksmith scams.
Prevent the next lockout
- Keep a spare key with someone you trust, not in a magnetic box under the car
- Keep your keys on you, not in a bag you set down or leave in the car
- Check that your fob battery is good
